TECO Coal History

On Christmas Eve in 1908 the first carload of coal was weighed and dispatched from a mine in the Southeastern Kentucky community of Gatliff. Today, Gatliff Coal Company, owned and operated by TECO Coal Corporation, continues to ship high quality coal products to customers around the world.

Underneath the hills of northeastern Tennessee, eastern and southeastern Kentucky and western Virginia, nature provided a unique combination of mineral qualities uncommon to most coals found in the eastern United States. The mineral constituents of these coals together with low-sulfur, ash fusion characteristics, and high energy content are special and enable our products to meet the tough combustion, environmental, quality, and applications standards of today.

The use of coal mined from our Gatliff mines permitted the utility to convert an older oil-fired power station to coal and meet federal and state clean-air requirements without the addition of costly scrubbers. By 1974, after successful testing, a total of six power units were converted.

In 1988
TECO Coal began marketing its metallurgical, ferro-silicon, and silicon-grade products. We have since become a proven exporter of these very special grades of coal to customers worldwide.

Through acquisition in 1991,
TECO Coal secured a dependable source of PCI coal and began an aggressive production, processing, and shipping campaign for customers utilizing this product.

Strategically located to supply customers across the eastern United States as well as those in Canada, Europe and the Middle East, our production subsidiaries include:
Gatliff Coal Co., Clintwood Elkhorn Mining Co., Premier Elkhorn Coal Co., and Perry County Coal Corp. Together with these companies, TECO Coal now maintains a combined work force of 800 to 900 employees.

Today,
TECO Coal recognizes that possessing specialized raw materials is, in itself, not enough. The production of a quality product that is consistent and dependable is essential; it’s a must for maintaining long-term business relationships and satisfying our customers.

To help ensure our products meet customer requirements and expectations, we began establishing a Quality Management System in mid-1996 and became
registered under the ISO-9000 series quality system standard in 1998.

Through good leadership, vision, hard work, and continued improvement, we have experienced dramatic change and abundant success. We’ve built on our strengths and we’ve developed new ones; we’ve grown and matured.

During the next millennium, be assured, we will be committed to improving our products, our processes and systems as well as our service. We will continue to be innovative and will satisfy the needs and expectations of our customers!
